Babies & children’s hospital

There are all types of nursing careers. You can be a registered nurse, nurse practitioner a certified nurse anesthetist to name a few. I have done research looking into what type of nurse I want to become. When looking into different careers, you will find out what type of patients you would be working with and what your salary would be. It will also tell you the type of skills and education that you need. Nursing has been around for thousands of years, things have changed over time, but the one thing that hasn’t is the need for nurses.

I have chosen to become a neonatal nurse. Neonatal nursing is a subspecialty of nursing that works with newborn infants born with a variety of problems ranging from prematurity, birth defects, HIV infection, addictions, cardiac malformations, and surgical problems. The neonatal period is defined as the first month of life; however, these newborns are often sick for months. The NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) formulate nursing care plans and assess, plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments in these plans.

On a daily basis they administer medications, perform complex procedures, work with complicated technology, and consult with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate all aspects of a patient’s care. There are two types of NICU. Level II which is found in community hospitals, are designed for less critically ill infants, who may require breathing assistance, help with feedings, or special medication. You work with up to three or four patients at a time. Then there level III are located in large medical centers like Rainbow children hospital and Akron children’s, and house infants who need the most high-tech and sophisticated care.

Most nurses work 12 hour shifts and they have to be composed, caring and in control every second of their shift. The national average for annual earning is $65,000, The average hourly rate is $31. 00, plus you have medical coverage. There are all types of training and education that you need. There are all different degrees that you can get for your career. Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN/AND) it can take two or more years to finish but once done you take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX_RN).

Bachelor of Science Nursing (BS/BSN) this takes four years and prepares you for your bedside and leadership roles and also to take your National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX_RN). Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) takes two years after you have already earned your BSN. There are different types of schools that you can choose from to get your degree. You have Brant & Stratton that you can go full time and pay somewhere around $45,000 for your degree. I choose to go to Cuyahoga Community Collage to get my Associate degree then I will be transferring to Akron University to finish of my Nursing degree.

It is going to take me longer to get my degree going to both schools but it will be worth it in the long run. There are a lot of opportunities for different jobs. You have the hospitals, and then you have the doctor’s office that also needs to have nurses. You just need to decide where you want to work. Most doctors’ office is Monday thru Friday 8 to 5, where hospitals are around the clock. So if you wanted just to work weekends you could, or night shift. I would love to work at Akron children’s hospital or Rainbows Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Both those hospital will help pay for your education, so you can work there while you are finishing up you degree or continue with your education. Akron Children's Hospital is ranked nationally in 7 pediatric specialties, Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, and Urology. Rainbows Babies & Children’s Hospital is ranked nationally in 10 specialties, Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Neonatology, nephrology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, and Urology. Those two hospitals have the best care for children.

My daughter was at Akron children’s hospital and the care she received there was the best. Those nurses and doctors have such compassion for their patients. It’s like they are taking care of their own child. I believe I would make a great nurse. You need to be able to handle the children like their own child. It takes a special kind of person to be able to work with infants who are ill. Those sick babies need special attention and help. It is very different then working on bigger children. I have taking classes for become a preschool teacher.

I have always loved children with is a special trait that you need to work with infants. So if you want to become a nurse who is in a specialized field it takes hard work and a lot of education. I didn’t realize until I did my research that Rainbows Babies & Children’s Hospital is ranked nationally in more specialized fields. To work in any of these two hospitals you much truly love babies and your job. Some of the babies born get left in the NICU with no visitors or anyone to care for them. So it take a special kind of person to work that job.
